Project 3
Philly Auto Show builds and gives away a MAZDA3 tuner

The Philadelphia Auto Show may not steal a lot of headlines from bigger shows like the annual soiree in Detroit, but greater Philly area sport compact tuners were making their own headlines at this year's iteration in the City of Brotherly Love. The 2005 Philadelphia Auto Show, produced by the Automobiles Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP), hosted a special Tuner Salon as part of this year's festivities. The Salon featured custom cars from a select group of local tuners as well as official displays from auto manufacturers and aftermarket performance companies.

Mazda has a long history of supporting and being a part of the sport compact community, so it was only natural that Mazda was involved in a big way. Besides taking part in the official display, Mazda also teamed up with the ADAGP and car designer Brian Fox from Fox Marketing to design and give away a brand new MAZDA3 - modified with all the right tasty aftermarket bits - at the show. The already sporty Rally White MAZDA3 was given a full makeover to show-stopper status using parts sponsored by BASF Automotive Finishes, Ground Designs 2000, HP Design Wheels, Toyo Tires, Injen, Eibach, Street Glow, Lightning Audio, TWM Performance, and Recaro. Fox selected work with sponsors to ensure that all the sponsored products would contribute to a cohesive finished product.

Local Philadelphia dealer North Penn Mazda was put in charge of all the extensive paint and body work. BASF auto finishes were used to give the MAZDA3's roof a distinctive black accent to match the hood's black trim. A Ground Designs 2000 body kit and upper deck spoiler were body color-matched with BASF paint and professionally installed to give the 3 an aggressive fascia and low to the ground aero look. A set of sexy HP Design HP05 18" wheels wrapped with Toyo Proxes 4 rubber and a 1.5" lower stance courtesy of Eibach Pro-Kit sport springs complete the touring car-look. Impressivesigns.com added an appropriate vinyl graphic scheme and a Street Glow underbody neon kit makes sure that the MAZDA3 brings its own party to any parking lot. An Injen intake system was added to add a bit of tuner style to the engine bay while adding a few ponies to the dyno sheet as well. Inside, a TWM Performance Short Shifter makes the quick shifts by the 5-speed gearbox even quicker. Shifting is done in comfort of course, thanks to a set of red Recaro Speed seats. No detail was left untouched though and the rear seat upholstery was redone in the same red fabric to match the Recaro racing buckets. Any mood music outside of the exhaust note can be provided by a Rockford DVD1 head unit, which is wired via Lightning Audio wiring to a Lightning Audio Amp and12 inch sub. Finally, more Street Glow neon (red and white) finish off the interior detailing. The entire installation process was swiftly carried out by North Penn Mazda in an amazing two weeks.

All potential entrants had to do for a shot at one of the hottest sport compacts on the market was to fill out an entry form at any of 12 Philadelphia area Mazda dealerships. From there, a finalist was selected from each dealership and sent to the show. Adding to the excitement, the giveaway winner was drawn live on local ABC channel 6. The lucky winner of the MAZDA3 turned out to be Jessica Minnick. The ecstatic Minnick will cruise the streets of Philadelphia in her new ride this summer, but she will no doubt also enter the show stopping car in a car show or two - so car show competitors beware. If you were in the Philly area and missed your chance to win the MAZDA3, don't worry - ADAGP, Mazda, and Fox Marketing are already talking about doing it all over again in 2006.
