2007 MAZDASPEED6 PERFORMANCE
Stand out in a crowd. Then leave them in the dust. The MAZDASPEED team built a car ready for action. They took the core architecture of the all-aluminum MAZDA6 i powerplant, and retooled it from end-to-end for more speed and even more power. The result is the 2007 MAZDASPEED6, a 270-horsepower flagship engine made with brawn and ready for pure performance.

The 2007 MAZDASPEED6 delivers high performance at the highest level, boasting speed and muscle with a 270 horsepower engine, and 15.6 lbs. of boost. Delivering a driving rush that could only come from MAZDA. With clean, pumped-up performance, superior handling, and brilliant design inside and out, the MAZDASPEED6 is an AWD sport sedan that combines the out-and-out fun of a sports car with the indulgent feel of a luxury car—in one dynamic package.

2.3-Liter DISI Turbo Inline-4

The 2.3-liter DISI engine produces 270 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at just 3,000 rpm. With the turbo spinning so eagerly, there's torque on tap at very low revs, giving the MAZDASPEED6 amazing in-gear acceleration.

  • A single-scroll turbocharger, produces up to 15.6 lb. of boost.
  • A top-mounted intercooler (rather than front-mounted) drastically reduces polar inertia.
  • High-intensity power demands the MAZDASPEED6's Direct Gas Injection system, to deliver fuel directly into each chamber, improve fuel dispersion, and cool the chambers. This produces a turbocharged engine with a high 9.5:1 compression ratio, and no engine knock.
  • The extra torque demands material enhancements like reshaped steel connecting rods with thicker rod pins, a steel crankshaft, and full-floating pistons. The result is greater low-end torque, lightning-quick turbo response, and increased fuel efficiency ... and the smooth feeling of Zoom-Zoom speed that can only come from MAZDASPEED.

6-Speed Manual Transmission

The MAZDASPEED6’s transmission is built with obsessive attention to detail, and includes:

  • Custom built design to handle the increased torque of the engine.
  • Gear ratios perfectly tuned to the turbocharged engine's power curve.
  • Triple-cone synchronizers on the first, second and third gears, and a double-cone synchronizer for the fourth gear, minimize shift effort, and deliver Mazda’s one-of-a-kind shift action and feel.

18-Inch Alloy Wheels

Muscled-up wheels create performance from the ground up. The MAZDASPEED6's 15-spoke wheels are wrapped in high-performance 215/45R 18 Y-rated tires. The wide-wheel diameter provides ample clearance for the large disc brakes.

Anti-Lock Braking System

With its 274 horsepower engine, the MAZDASPEED6 brake system perfectly calibrated to handle all that power with the four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), and an Active Torque Spilt All-Wheel-Drive system. Huge 12.4-inch ventilated discs diminish velocity in the front, and 12.3-inch solid discs are in the rear.

HANDLING
A close-ratio, slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission is fitted and really encourages the MAZDASPEED6 driver to explore this car's performance. The extremely small transmission employs triple cone synchronizers – which minimize shift effort – for first, second and third gears, with a double cone synchronizer for fourth gear, allowing for smooth up and downshifts. Brass synchronizers were chosen on select gears to minimize shift balking and maximize feel.

Mazda engineers specified a six-speed manual transmission as it was deemed to be the best mix of proper gear-spacing, ease of use and outright performance. No automatic was available, as the engineering team felt that a proper sports sedan should be equipped with a manual transmission, to fully involve the driver in the experience.

The dynamic driving experience is further enhanced by the MAZDASPEED6's Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive system. The system yields a superb balance between driving excitement and stability under all road conditions. The torque transfer system found in the MAZDASPEED 6 adjusts front/rear torque distribution between 100:0 and 50:50 for optimum drive power to each wheel, and can react to wheel slippage much more quickly than conventional gear- or fluid-controlled systems.

Reinforced Structure

The MAZDASPEED6 delivers tighter responsiveness, plus easier handling and control, as a result of torsional rigidity in the body structure which features a 50% increase over the MAZDA6’s stiff structure. This extra reinforcement was made on a sub-assembly level, to target the areas where increased rigidity is needed most, while keeping the vehicle’s overall weight light and ready for action.

Front Suspension

The MAZDASPEED6 is designed with a double wishbone geometry, for perfect wheel position control and the ability to isolate the springs and dampers from lateral forces. Always seeking to make the best even better, Mazda has made some important performance changes:

  • Damping force of the double-wishbone front suspension has been increased by 25% over the MAZDA6, with a 25% higher spring rate for the coil springs, to take feel and response to the next level.
  • The front stabilizer bar has been increased in diameter from 23mm to 24mm, for ultimate control.

Rear Suspension

Rear suspension on the MAZDASPEED6 achieves smart performance with these key features:

  • To help put you right where you need to be, an E-type Multi-link rear suspension eliminates lateral forces on the coil springs and maintains consistent wheel camber.
  • Specially designed mono-tube dampers deliver a delicious response, with smooth transitions between compression and rebound.
  • Rear spring weight has been increased by 37%, and the rear stabilizer bar was increased in diameter from 21mm to 23mm. Say good-bye to fishtailing, forever.

Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive

The MAZDASPEED6 with advanced AWD system analyzes real-time data on steering angle, yaw rate, lateral G-force and engine status to establish up-to-minute road surface conditions, and the vehicle's dynamic status. Normal, Sport, and Snow modes give the perfect amount of torque where it is most needed, and have a performance reaction that leaves conventional gear- or fluid-controlled systems in the dust. Front/rear torque distribution varies from 100/0 to 50/50. The water-cooled Power Take Off center differential gives unshakable power delivery under all weather and driving conditions by distributing torque to the rear axle.

Rear Limited-Slip Differential

Negotiating slippery surfaces, maneuvering precise corners – the MAZDASPEED6 gives a stable, easy ride in difficult conditions, thanks to the torque-sensing, limited-slip differential, which takes advantage of torque, and ensures excellent power delivery to each of the rear wheels based on their individual traction. The water-cooled Power Take Off center differential provides consistent power delivery under all weather and driving conditions by distributing torque to the rear axle.
