Shape & Contours

Warning: Thrilling curves ahead–and we don’t mean the road.

The 2013 MX-5 Miata echoes the classic curves of its predecessor with a modern, seductive flair. The redesigned grille and front fascia, plus wide, sculpted fenders and smooth arching bodylines, amplify the Miata’s muscular look while working together aerodynamically for less turbulent, top-down exhilaration.

Designed for Sport. And real life.

From the distinctive front fascia to high performance tires and dual exhaust outlets, the MX-5 boasts sporty design cues worthy of its prowess—and a few unexpected conveniences too.

  • Available Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry & Start System
  • Rear-window defogger
  • Dual-power side mirrors (painted black on Club models)
  • Halogen fog lights
  • Exclusive Club badge, rocker panel striping, and black trim accents (Club models)
  • 17-inch gunmetal (Club models) or silver (Grand Touring) aluminum alloy wheels

Z-fold Soft Top

Change the atmosphere of your drive in seconds, literally. Go from controlled climate to topless with a Z-fold soft top that stows in as little as two seconds. Thanks to the convenient central release lever, you can easily-yet-securely lock or release the convertible top without getting out of the driver’s seat. The aerodynamically designed convertible top adds little weight to the vehicle and, when lowered, collapses into its own compartment for a tight fit that doesn’t reduce your 5.3 cubic feet of trunk space.

Clear Illumination

Standard halogen headlights brightly illuminate the path ahead and last longer than traditional incandescent headlamps. Or choose the available Xenon headlights for even brighter, whiter and broader light in all conditions. The low-set and stylishly bold clear-lens halogen fog lights–standard on all trims–project light beneath the fog layer to help increase visibility in inclement weather.

Driver-centric Cabin

The MX-5 cockpit was designed for one purpose–to make you feel at one with your machine. Custom fit control starts with a sporty, leather-wrapped steering wheel that provides a comfortable, confident grip. Strategically positioned pedals provide even faster heel-and-toe action for those hairpin turns while racing-inspired gauges help keep you in tune with the engine. Strap into the adjustable driver’s bucket seat designed meticulously to accommodate your specific driving position, or upgrade to heated leather-trimmed seats with five heat settings.

Audio & Entertainment

An exhilarating ride deserves an audio system to match. The standard 6-speaker MP3-compatible audio system is equipped with an auxiliary-audio input jack for mobile devices, speed-sensing audio volume control plus available SiriusXMTM Satellite Radio with a 4-month trial subscription to the Sirius Select Package. Grand Touring delivers crisp, immersive sound through a 7-speaker Bose audio system with AudioPilot® ambient noise compensation technology and a 6-disc in-dash CD changer.

Bluetooth® Phone Hands-free Connectivity

Keeping your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel has never been easier. With the available Bluetooth®** hands-free system with voice command, making and receiving calls is as easy as pushing a button on the steering wheel and saying hello.

Track-proven Performance

With over 20 years of racing heritage, the MX-5 is the most-raced roadster and the official vehicle of the Skip Barber Driving Schools. Here’s the power behind the icon:

  • Free-revving 2.0L 16-valve DOHC engine
  • 167 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque
  • Highly responsive, electronically-controlled throttle and port fuel injection
  • Ultra-light aluminum alloy block and cylinder
  • Variable valve timing and variable induction for strong low-end torque

To transfer this force to the pavement, we gave Club and Grand Touring models a precise and ultra-responsive short-throw, close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox. The available 6-speed sport automatic includes steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters for more control, transforming anticipation into exhilaration.

Suspension & Handling

Lightweight construction and 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution are only the beginning of MX-5’s superior handling.

  • Aluminum-alloy, double-wishbone front suspension and rear multilink suspension
  • Hollow front stabilizer bar, four gas-charged shock absorbers and a solid rear stabilizer bar minimize body roll
  • Suspension Package includes sport-tuned springs and high-performance Bilstein® shock absorbers

Fuel Efficiency

Thanks to its lightweight body and efficient, friction-reducing engine, the MX-5 with 5-speed manual transmission achieves an EPA-estimated 22 city/28 Highway MPG without compromising its trademark exhilarating performance. 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission models get an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city and an EPA-estimated 28 on the highway.

Active Safety Features

Zero to 60 is nothing without 60 to zero.
All MX-5s are equipped with these standard safety features:

  • Ultra-responsive 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes—11.4 inch
vented disc brakes up front and 11-inch on the rear
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution ensures maximum stopping power
  • Dynamic Stability Control†† and Traction Control System
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System

Crash Protection

Safety is at the core of our engineering—and the Miata’s. Using the “gram strategy” and ultra-high-tensile steel, Mazda engineers made the MX-5 lightweight and perfectly balanced without reducing the strength and integrity of the body’s construction. All trims are equipped with advanced dual front airbags‡‡ with a passenger-side deactivation switch and dual side impact airbags.

Anti-theft Features

The standard engine immobilizer anti-theft system helps protect your vehicle by requiring a properly coded key to start the engine. If a counterfeit key is used, the engine will not start. Available as an accessory or part of the Premium Package, the perimeter alarm system helps to deter potential damage or theft of your Miata while parked.

From classics to concepts and breakthrough innovations, Mazda has an impressive history with the automotive industry–and the MX-5 is no exception. See the MX-5 Miata's different variations over the years, starting with the first in 1989.

1989 - First Generation MX-5 Miata

The Mazda MX-5 was first revealed to the world at the Chicato Auto Show in February 1989 to such excitement that demand quickly exceeded production.

The new MX-5 Miata brought a more powerful engine and new styling, as well as a special limited-edition model celebrating its 10th anniversary. Things were going very well for Mazda's spirited roadster. In 2000, the MX-5 was certified as the best-selling two-seat convertible in the world, with sales reaching 531,890 units.

2005 - Third generation mx-5 miata

The MX-5 Miata was all new and extensively revised from headlight to exhaust in 2005, but it never strayed far from the original. This open-top roadster still offered killer looks and wind-in-your-hair exhilaration at an affordable price.

2013 - MX-5 Miata: A Classic that keeps getting better

Updated for 2013, the iconic MX-5 Miata boldly lives up to its “soul of a sports car” identity. Through the last 20 years, its man-and-machine-as-one formula has earned it 178 major automotive awards around the world and the highly respected position as both the world’s most-raced nameplate and the most-popular sports car ever built.
