Retractable Hardtop

Style that truly moves you

Fitting a rigid hardtop into a space just big enough for a folding cloth-top is about as easy as pouring a large jug of water into a smaller one. But that’s exactly what our engineers accomplished with the 2017 MX-5 RF. After considering several methods, some as dramatic as splitting the roof into seven parts, they came up with a functional yet beautiful solution. Ultimately, they perfected the delicate dance between open air and secure cabin, getting it down to a mere 13 seconds.

LIGHTER POWER PLANT FRAME

The aluminum power plant frame…

LIGHTER POWER PLANT FRAME

The aluminum power plant frame has undergone a weight loss of nearly 20 percent from the previous-generation MX-5. That means a more connected, responsive driving experience – every time you get behind the wheel.

DRIVING. IN PERFECT HARMONY.

There’s more than one road to driving thrills…

DRIVING. IN PERFECT HARMONY.

There’s more than one road to driving thrills. The MX-5 RF takes the lightweight, rear-wheel drive route. And when a driver is behind the wheel, near-perfect 50/50 weight balance. The RF is also highly rigid yet lightweight. This is all thanks to its SKYACTIV®-Chassis that plays a key role in the MX-5 RF’s nimbleness and stability. Together, the RF’s balance and rigid chassis create an incredibly responsive drive and an undeniable connection between man and machine.

6-SPEED TRANSMISSION

One major perk about the MX-5 RF…

6-SPEED TRANSMISSION

One major perk about the MX-5 RF is its six-speed manual transmission. It’s small and light, yet retains the short-throw precision drivers love. So whether you’re cruising down a curvy road or dashing down a straightaway, the MX-5 RF’s transmission will ensure an effortless and enjoyable drive.

PREMIUM DETAILS

MAZDA’S SIGNATURE MACHINE GRAY METALLIC

Like the Machine Gray Metallic 2016 Mazda CX-9, the RF looks as if it’s machined from a solid piece of steel. It starts with a black primer coat that’s covered with a precisely sprayed layer of aluminum silver paint. The process is highly controlled to ensure the aluminum paint flakes fall into a pattern parallel with the body panels. This gives the black and silver hues more luminosity and a liquid reflective quality. Lastly, layers of gray-tinted and colorless clear coating are applied to top off our most premium color yet.

A CABIN BUILT AROUND YOU

When we set out to design the first-ever…

A CABIN BUILT AROUND YOU

When we set out to design the first-ever Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, we knew the cabin had to be just as beautiful as the exterior. It also had to evoke a sense of excitement for the road ahead. So, we made sure every detail was purposefully placed to make driving better. From the instrument panel to the gear selector, everything was laid out with intention and care to make your every move more intuitive. Why? To let you focus on what matters most: driving.

BOLD DESIGN THAT CELEBRATES DRIVING

The KODO: “Soul of Motion” design language is not just a curve in the side panels or the shape of a headlight. You’ll find it captured in the very essence of the MX-5 RF. Whether the roof is up or down, its muscular stance conveys an aggressive design while maintaining a fluid symmetry.

JINBA ITTAI

A TRULY CONNECTED DRIVE

Imagine an archer on horseback, riding toward a target. He inhales and exhales in perfect harmony with his horse’s gait. The horse steadies as the archer pulls back his arrow. Perfect shot. This relationship between horse and rider is called Jinba Ittai. It’s a 900-year-old Japanese tradition, but it’s more important to us now than ever. We strive to engineer this connection into each and every one of our cars. The RF, being a true driver’s car, is certainly no exception.

THE JOY FROM DRIVING

THE JOY FROM DRIVING

At Mazda, our single biggest goal is to build cars that bring people joy. Cars that make you feel better when you step out than before you stepped in. We believe people should feel rejuvenated and exhilarated every time they take the wheel. Not just on curvy roads, or barreling down a straightaway, but even commuting or running errands. Every last detail is centered around bringing a smile to the driver.

BREATHING LIFE INTO DESIGN

Clay modelers are the heart and soul of our design process. They take simple sketches and turn them into living, breathing, 3-D models. Every artist puts his passion into everything he creates, therefore infusing a soul into each model. These craftsmen then work hand-in-hand with digital modelers to finesse and enhance each creation.

TUNED ENGINE

The same exquisite road manners and thrilling drivability that made the MX-5 Miata a favorite among driving enthusiasts can be found in the daring new MX-5 RF. Its SKYACTIV®-G 2.0L 4-cylinder engine generates 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Plus, innovative details like an aluminum-alloy block and cylinder head help make the engine lightweight yet potent.

DROP THE TOP. RAISE YOUR EXPECTATIONS.

Our dedicated team of engineers worked tirelessly to produce a fastback roof that was both beautiful and functional. It had to move quickly and elegantly while complementing the silhouette of this sleek and mysterious roadster. After countless rounds of trial and error, our team developed a truly innovative, power-folding fastback roof that operates seamlessly in about 13 seconds.

METICULOUS MILLIMETERS

METICULOUS MILLIMETERS

When Kouichi Matsumoto and his team set out to build the perfect fastback roof, they knew it wouldn’t be easy. Making a complex mechanism perform quietly and elegantly was no simple task. Yet, they were determined to make it work. It took dozens of engineers countless hours to discover the perfect line. One glorious day, an engineer suggested moving part of the mechanism inside by a mere 70 millimeters – and eureka! It made all the difference.

CAN A FEW BLINKING LIGHTS GIVE YOU PEACE OF MIND?

Technology that inspires confidence. That’s what available i-ACTIVSENSE® safety innovations give you. They use advanced technologies like milliwave radars and cameras to give you a sixth sense for safety, helping to alert you to hazards before they happen. It’s another way Mazda lets you focus on what matters most: driving.

ADAPTIVE FRONT-LIGHTING SYSTEM

This available system is designed to help you see around corners at night. As you turn into a corner, the headlights pivot up to 15 degrees in the direction of your turn, improving visibility and allowing you to spot potential hazards ahead.

HIGH BEAM CONTROL

Available High Beam Control helps the driver see better at night by maximizing opportunities to use the high beams. The system automatically switches to low beams when it detects oncoming traffic and/or a vehicle ahead.

LANE DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM

When traveling at speeds of 41 mph or higher, this available system gives you audible and visual warnings when it detects that your vehicle is about to unintentionally depart from its lane.2

REAR CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT

When backing up, this available feature helps detect a vehicle approaching from the side and promptly alerts the driver with an audible warning, as well as a visual warning in either side mirror and the display screen.3

BLIND SPOT MONITORING

This available system helps detect objects in your blind spots and alerts you with a chime and warning light in the side mirror.4
