Small SUVs—also known as compact or C-segment SUVs—typically seat up to five passengers and are ideal for drivers who want more space and a higher driving position than a sedan, all in a more agile and maneuverable package than midsize or full-size SUVs.
The compact SUV position as the sweet spot between subcompact SUVs or sedans and full-size SUVs or trucks makes them a versatile option, especially for urban environments. Their elevated driving position, strong utility, maneuverability, and fuel efficiency have all contributed to the popularity of this segment. Many compact SUVs also feature AWD for better traction and stability in poor weather conditions.
-
Subcompact SUVs are typically considered the smallest type of SUV. Compact SUVs are slightly larger (length, width, and height) and sit between subcompact SUVs and midsize SUVs. Compact SUVs’ larger size generally comes with more interior space, cargo capacity, and towing capacity.
Compact SUVs are generally significantly smaller than midsize SUVs. Compact SUVs often seat up to five passengers, while some midsize SUVs have a third row to create seating for up to eight passengers. The larger size of midsize SUVs like the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 results in a larger cargo area and typically creates the need to use a larger engine which may also lead to an increase in towing capacity.
-
Most compact SUVs weigh between 3,200 and 4,000 lbs, while subcompact SUV generally range between 2,500 and 3,500 lbs (although this can vary depending on the model, trim, features, drivetrain, and more). The Mazda CX-30, our smallest SUV, has a curb weight of 3,419 lbs (Mazda CX-30 2.5 S models). The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, with its hybrid drivetrain and battery pack is significantly heavier, with a curb weight of 4,008 lbs.
-
The smallest crossover SUV in our current lineup is the Mazda CX-30 — compact on the outside, spacious on the inside, and designed for tight city streets. It offers the elevated ride height of an SUV and is especially valuable for those living in cities where tight parking spots and narrow roads require a smaller footprint.
-
The CX-5 is especially well-suited to urban and suburban driving, offering a smooth ride, polished design, and a quieter cabin. The CX-50, on the other hand, was engineered for adventure — with rugged styling, available towing up to 3,500 lbs (when properly equipped),15 and a longer, lower profile that improves stability off the pavement. Both offer the signature responsiveness of Mazda vehicles, but the CX-50 adds a more outdoors-focused experience.
-
Yes. i-Activ AWD® is standard on all CX-30, CX-5, and CX-50 models, with the CX-50 Hybrid model offering an e-AWD system that optimizes use of the engine and electric drive motors to power the front and rear wheels.14
-
Yes. The CX-50 Hybrid is a fuel-conscious compact crossover SUV, designed to go farther without compromising the drive. It pairs a 2.5-liter engine with electric motors and e-AWD, offering over 100 miles19 of additional driving range compared to CX-50 2.5 S and 2.5 Turbo models — ideal for both longer commutes and weekend escapes.
-
Mazda compact crossover SUVs are thoughtfully designed to comfortably carry both passengers and gear. The subcompact CX-30 offers up to 45.2 cubic feet with rear seats folded. The compact CX-5 holds up to 59.3 cubic feet, while the CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid feature a wide opening and a flat cargo floor, with up to 56.3 cubic feet of space — perfect for camping gear, groceries, or luggage.
-
Every Mazda subcompact and compact crossover SUV comes with i-Activsense® safety technology. Standard safety features include Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.28 These systems are designed to help you stay aware of your driving environment and confident behind the wheel.
-
Mazda crossover SUVs offer competitive mileage for their classes. The CX-30, CX-50 and CX-5 with the standard 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine are especially efficient for daily driving, while the CX-50 Hybrid is built with fuel-consciousness in mind — giving you extended range without requiring a stop to recharge.29
-
Yes — especially for families who value both practicality and design. All of our subcompact and compact models offer seating for five, child seat compatibility, generous safety technology, and quiet, comfortable cabins. The CX-5 is especially popular for families thanks to its balanced size, upscale features, and smooth ride.
-
Think about how — and where — you drive most. If you want a subcompact-sized vehicle with premium finishes, the CX-30 fits easily into tight spaces. For a refined all-rounder with everyday practicality, the CX-5 delivers. If your weekends involve trails, gear, or longer road trips, the CX-50 and CX-50 hybrid were built with that in mind.
-
Compact SUVs are ideal for balancing safety and cargo space with a “right-sized” footprint, so consider features that maximize these aspects. Comprehensive safety systems like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings, and automatic emergency braking provide peace of mind while you’re driving. Flexible cargo and seating configurations with cargo organizers and fold-down rear seats can make the most of a smaller interior.
As an SUV, these vehicles should also have comfortable interiors and pleasant cabin environments for long drives and daily commutes. Their smaller size means that handling and driving performance should also be considered, as compact SUVs will be more nimble than their larger counterparts. Lastly, consider what entertainment and technology features are included — do you need outlets in the back row for kids to charge their devices? Or is having a heads-up display and Apple CarPlay® integration for your iPhone®/Android AutoTM integration30 a dealbreaker?
