FAQs
Mild hybrids, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids are three different types of electrified vehicles combining a combustion engine with an electric motor. They differ in how the vehicle is powered and how battery packs are charged.
Mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) feature an internal combustion engine (ICE) with a small electric motor and battery. MHEV batteries are too small to power the vehicle, so they support the combustion engine in low-load driving situations. The battery is charged via regenerative braking, and also powers vehicle accessories like the climate control system. A key benefit of MHEVs can be better fuel efficiency compared to vehicles with similarly sized ICEs, even though electric power can't move the vehicle on its own.
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) feature a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor compared to an MHEV. As a result, an HEV can be powered by the electric motor, combustion engine or a combination of the two.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) feature even larger batteries and more powerful electric motors compared to HEVs, although they still utilize a gas engine. The main difference between a PHEV and an HEV is, as the name suggests, PHEV batteries can be recharged by plugging them into an external electricity source, or via regenerative braking and the vehicle’s gasoline engine. Additionally, PHEVs have the ability to drive short distances using electric power only in an EV mode.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV has an all-electric driving range of up to 32 miles when fully charged, and a combined estimated range of 520 miles using electric and combustion power.24
Yes, charging at home is possible thanks to the versatile and portable Level 1 charging cable that comes with your CX-70 PHEV. Simply plug your vehicle into a standard 120-volt wall outlet. If you are looking to get the job done faster, you can install a universal Level 2 home charger to significantly reduce charging time.
You can also use the MyMazda app to find public charging stations near you.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV pairs a 2.5L gasoline engine with a powerful electric motor. When in EV mode, used for typical city driving, power is provided by the electric motor. The gas engine is employed when extra power is needed for acceleration or when the PHEV battery is low.
You can recharge your electric battery by regenerative braking, the gas engine, or by plugging into a Level 1 or Level 2 charger.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV battery is covered by a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty for 96 months or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). Additionally, an extended battery emissions warranty covering 10 years, or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first) is available in some states. See your Mazda Dealer for Limited Warranty details.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV will charge in approximately 11 hours with the provided Level 1 charging cable. However, if you install a Level 2 home charger, that time is reduced to approximately 2.5 hours.25
Both the CX-70 and CX-70 PHEV feature an advanced 8-speed automatic transmission for a smooth and seamless driving experience.
The CX-70 PHEV can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped with a tow hitch. The tow hitch is an accessory available as a dealer-installed or port-installed option.26
The 2026 Mazda CX-70 Plug-in Hybrid is a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+. Notable safety features that come standard on all Mazda CX-70 PHEV models include Smart Brake Support, Lane-keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, and Vehicle Exit Warning.
You can learn more in the Mazda CX-70 PHEV Safety Features section.
Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) is a unique Mazda technology that applies braking to the inside rear wheel while cornering. This pulls down the vehicle's inner rear corner and helps suppress body roll. The technology provides enhanced precision and better driving dynamics, and it's a standard feature in the Mazda CX-70 and CX-70 PHEV.27
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV is available in two different trim levels:
- CX-70 PHEV SC: Starting at $44,450
- CX-70 PHEV SC Plus: Starting at $47,450
Trim levels can include differences in things like engine specs, safety features, technology, and more. You can learn more about the differences and features included in each trim level on the Mazda CX-70 PHEV Trims & Specs page.
Starting MSRP excludes taxes, title, license fees and $1,645 destination charge (Alaska $1,690). Actual dealer price will vary. See dealer for complete details.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV is a mid-size SUV with sporty style and features. It’s larger than the Mazda CX-5 and the Mazda CX-50. The CX-70 PHEV is an option for those seeking a vibrant and active lifestyle who need extra cargo space. By comparison, the similarly sized Mazda CX-90 offers 3rd-row seating and can accommodate up to 8 people. The CX-90 is perfect for families or those who enjoy driving around others in an elegantly crafted interior.
The Mazda CX‑70 PHEV and CX‑90 PHEV are nearly identical in design and powertrain, but the main difference is seating: The CX‑70 PHEV is a two-row SUV that seats five and offers more cargo space, making it ideal for smaller families, couples, or those who don’t need a third row. The CX‑90 PHEV adds a third row to seat up to seven, catering to larger families or those needing extra passenger capacity.
Both share the PHEV powertrain, towing capability (up to 3,500 lbs)26 , interior design, and tech features—so your choice mainly depends on whether you prioritize passenger space.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV comes standard with a 12.3‑inch full-color, Apple CarPlay® / Android Auto™ integration, Alexa Built-in, and available Active Driving Display.
Connectivity extends with Mazda Connected Services, MyMazda app, and available in-car Wi‑Fi and emergency 911 features.
You can learn about these and other infotainment features in the Cargo and Technology section on this page.
The Mazda CX‑70 offers the following cargo space:
- 39.6 cubic feet behind the second row
- 75.3 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded flat
CX-70 also includes an underfloor storage compartment for added convenience.
The Mazda CX‑70 PHEV has a seating capacity of 5 passengers. It features two rows of seats, with no third-row option.
