Mazda Ignites Innovation & Inspires Cal Poly Pomona Students

Automaker’s employees join student engineers on their race to success, cultivating confidence and career readiness.

Embodying the Mazda philosophy of leading with empathy and fostering human connection, a career in auto engineering offers rewarding opportunities for dedicated, innovative individuals who embody technical prowess. For the student engineers at California Polytechnic (Cal Poly Pomona) State University at Pomona’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), annual competitions like the Baja SAE and Formula SAE series put these traits to the test.

The SAE teams at Cal Poly Pomona, known for their bold approach and competitive spirit, sought expert design support and were introduced to Mazda through Heather O’Rourke, project manager IT support and the founder of the Mazda Women in Leadership Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG).

Upon meeting with the students, O’Rourke recognized a natural synergy between the engineers at Mazda, renowned for their meticulous craftsmanship, and the Cal Poly Pomona SAE teams. The collaboration is an example of the Mazda philosophy of Omotenashi, a Japanese concept where one’s happiness is found in prioritizing the happiness of others. Through this spirit, students received the guidance needed to excel in upcoming competitions and explore rewarding careers in auto engineering.

The competition at these events is intense, attracting participants from across the globe with more than 500 teams from 40+ countries. The 2024 Cal Poly Pomona teams consisted of 10 to 15 students. Along each step of the way leading up to the competition, 15 Mazda volunteers were on hand to provide expert support and mentorship to the students as they built and designed Formula, off-road and electric vehicles.

In addition to getting counsel at the competitions, the students learned firsthand from Mazda engineers what a career in auto engineering can look like, through professional networking opportunities with industry professionals.

"Mazda gave some great feedback to help us improve and good insights into working in the industry," said Leena Amer, a class of 2026 student at Cal Poly Pomona.

“The career advice Mazda offered is something I will highly value as I progress in my career as an engineer,” adds Elizabeth Beaudreau, a class of 2025 graduate.

Collectively, Mazda volunteers contributed more than 80 hours to Cal Poly Pomona teams in 2024. Among them, Alex Otts, senior engineer R&D design, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, extending an open invitation to the students: “If you have any questions, design or profession related, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

To conclude the 2024 partnership, the Mazda Women in Leadership EBRG and Motorsports & Sponsorships teams surprised the students with auto parts to round out their designs.

“Helping students find their passion and giving them real-world insights is how we ensure the future of the auto industry is vibrant and innovative,” said O’Rourke. “The Women in Leadership team, and Mazda in general, is passionate about fostering the next generation of talent and moving the industry, as well as the individuals who make it up, forward.”

The partnerships between Mazda and Cal Poly Pomona, facilitated by O’Rourke, exemplifies a core Mazda belief: uplifting communities can create a ripple effect. When individuals are empowered to discover their passions and thrive, it sparks joy and creates a sense of connection. Mazda is committed to inspiring the next generation of talent to ensure an engaged, innovative future for the automotive industry.

Together, Mazda and Cal Poly Pomona have established a strong relationship and are building a bright future for those pursuing a career in the auto industry. Mazda is eager to continue supporting educational initiatives that cultivate talent and drive innovation in the sector.
